Biblical Studies
Old Testament Survey-The recordings of Pastor Chuck Smith’s “Through the Bible” messages delivered at Calvary Chapel of Costa Mesa will be completed over the course of a calendar year. . As you take this course, you will study the majority of the Old Testament verse-by-verse by listening to the expository messages and writing down personal application points from the teachings. Some books of the Bible surveyed or covered in other classes are excluded from this year-long course.
New Testament Survey-The recordings of Pastor Chuck Smith’s “Through the Bible” messages delivered at Calvary Chapel of Costa Mesa will be completed over the course of a year. As you take this course, you will study the majority of the New Testament verse-by-verse from Matthew through Revelation by listening to the expository messages, and writing down personal application points from the teachings. Some books of the Bible surveyed or covered in other classes are excluded from this year- long course.
Biblical Counseling– This course provides an introduction to basic concepts and distinctive features of biblical counseling. Learners study the meaning of biblical counseling, and its components. They are introduced to the role of the counselor, different kinds of counseling based on individuals’ needs, and the place of counseling in church ministry.
Biblical Leadership– This course explores principles and practices of biblical leadership from the standpoint that Christian leaders are those on mission with God, and, as leaders, are focused on influencing those they lead to join God on His mission and to pursue God’s purpose for their lives. As such, this course surveys leadership from a biblical and theological perspective. Topics addressed will include the foundational beliefs, core convictions, and essential attributes that lead to godly leadership.
Biblical Spiritual Formation– This course is an analysis of biblical principles that develop and maintain one’s relationship with God and one’s thoughts about God’s character.
Eschatology- (Daniel/Revelation/others)– This course will look at various prophecies throughout the Bible that speak of events about or related to the end times or the last days of world history. These prophecies may have already been fulfilled, may be going on as we speak or have not yet occurred. These prophecies include Israel, the church, the world with a focus on how they relate to us today.
Life in the Holy Spirit The Bible describes the Holy Spirit as a person, the third person of the Trinity. Students will learn who the Holy Spirit is and His work in the believer’s life. Students will learn about the personal relationship and the enabling power that comes with the baptism of the Holy Spirit in today’s age.
Systematic Theology– The purpose of this class is to give an introduction to orthodox Christian theology. Topics include the major branches of systematic theology: the Triune God, His attributes, mankind, sin, salvation, creation, church, last things
Old Testament
Genesis– The intention of this survey course is to study the magnificent account of the creation of mankind and the unfolding plan of the redemption of mankind.
Life of Moses-This course looks at Moses’s major points of contact with God with a focus on his development in faith and leadership of the nation of Israel.
Life of David-One of the greatest men in the Bible is King David. It was God Himself who described David as a man “after My own heart.” Yet David was also a man with faults and failures, just like everyone else. This course will focus on the life and leadership of David.
The Prophets-The prophets of the Old Testament conveyed the words of God to ancient Israel, promised the advent of Jesus the Messiah, and are still relevant to our modern setting. This survey course will identify themes in the ministries of Old Testament prophets and to relate them to their life and ministry in the present day.
New Testament
The Life of Christ– This course will be a survey of one of the three synoptic gospels, following the earthly life of Jesus Christ.
Gospel of John– This course will be a survey of the entire gospel with emphasis on the theology of the gospel and an in-depth look at the person and work of Jesus Christ, particularly in His deity and humanity.
Acts– This course is a survey of the Book of Acts. We will look at the growth of the early church and church practice, studying the aspects of early church missions, church planting and discipleship.
Romans– A survey of the letter, using Paul’s question-and-answer format for systematic doctrine, but with an emphasis on its significance for practical exhortation toward Christian living
Corinthian Letters– This survey course looks at these letters that address the problems that plagued the Corinthian church and are still of great concern to the Church today: division, marital conflicts, sexual immorality, Christian liberty, spiritual gifts
Life of Paul- This course will begin by taking a look at Paul’s life before and after his encounter with the risen Christ en route to Damascus, then examine many of Paul’s letters (Galatians, Philippians-2 Thessalonians, Philemon) individually, highlighting the main strands of Paul’s teachings
Ephesians– The objective of this class is to give the student a thorough working knowledge of Ephesians, surveying the book while including the major doctrines presented in the epistle.
The Pastoral Epistles– In this course, we will learn about the important and practical issues in the church, shared by Paul in his letters to Timothy and Titus with both encouragement and instruction.
Hebrews– The Book of Hebrews is divided into two sections: first, the superiority of the Son in His person and work (1:1-10:18); and second, the practical application of the superiority of the Son in the lives of believers (10:19-13:25) in this survey course.
The New Testament Epistles– The contents of each book (letters of James, Peter, John, and Jude) are studied in survey and summary form.
Spiritual Development: (Saturday Seminars)
The following seminars will be offered at a rotating location roughly halfway through each module of a semester. The seminars will be open to all Calvary Chapel churches in New England, and will be required for NECCSoM students.
Apologetics– The course will consist of an examination and evaluation of the argument for the truthfulness of Christianity. Emphasis will be given to the nature of truth, the existence of God, evil, hell, the reliability of the Bible, the deity of Christ, the resurrection of Christ, and other elements that comprise the core doctrines of Christianity. In addition, attention will be directed to understanding the formation of the Christian canon of Scripture.
Calvary Chapel 101– This course is a study through the Calvary Chapel Distinctives. This class will examine the major themes that make Calvary Chapel distinctively different and unique in the current church age.
Church History– This class will equip students with an overview of the major events, doctrines, and people that God used in the development of His Church for the furtherance of the Gospel.
Church Planting– Learn the ins and outs, challenges, and approaches to church planting. Discover and discuss strategies on church planting, how to reach people in your city, and how to build a God-honoring, community-changing church from the ground up.
Inductive Bible Study– The purpose for this class is to teach and encourage people to study the Word of God by carefully observing, carefully interpreting, accurately cross-referencing, and relevantly applying the text to their lives.
Missions and Evangelism– This course provides students an introduction to the study of missions, missionary life, and ministry on the mission field.; This course will focus on the explanation of evangelism as a Christian responsibility and biblical imperative.
Prayer & Fasting-The goal of the combination of prayer and fasting is to eliminate distractions for a spiritual purpose….to draw closer to God. This seminar will cover the combination of prayer and fasting not just in theory, but in practice.
Spiritual Warfare– The focus of this class is to help the individual learn how to stand strong in Christ, bringing an understanding of the forces we deal with in the spiritual realm reminding ourselves of what resources God has provided to us to have victory in our daily Christian walk.
Storyline of the Bible– In the pursuit to understand the Storyline of the Bible, this course will aim to equip the student to see the flow of the narrative presented to us in the Scriptures. Our focus will be on seeing the Bible as a unified whole and will not center upon deep verse-by-verse study of passages. We will learn to see this great drama of redemption as it finds its fulfillment in Christ and the renewal of all things so that we may learn to faithfully place each passage we come to in its proper context.
Worship– The purpose of this class is to provide the student with practical teaching regarding the ministry of worship in a church setting. The student will learn about the various aspects of the ministry, i.e. church leadership, spiritual warfare, co-laboring with the pastor, etc.
Ministry Practicum
A Day Apart–
Biblical Teaching 101– All NECCSoM will be given a monthly opportunity with a small group (or larger) at their home church to teach the Bible. This is to be done at the arrangement and discretion of the pastor. Small groups can include: college or young adult groups, home groups, men’s groups, staff meetings, women’s groups, youth groups, or any other setting as instructed by the pastor. Students will learn to share insights from God’s Word in this setting while also learning how to present the gospel as a standard closing.
Ministry 101– (Practical Christian Service) All NECCSoM students must be serving on at least a monthly basis in their home Calvary Chapel. This service will be at the discretion and direction of the pastor or someone he designates.
Missions 101– All NECCSoM students must serve on a short term mission trip (minimum of one day) over the course of While it is the hope that each student will serve with their home church, it is not required that they do so. Any short term mission trip with any of the New England Calvary Chapels will satisfy this requirement, but the arrangement to do so must be made with the guidance of your pastor.
